Baguio mercury level drops

BAGUIO CITY – The mercury level dropped here on Wednesday at 10 degrees Celsius, the lowest so far this year, and moved up .4 notches on Thursday (10.4) and a little higher Friday at 11.2 degrees.

This development has caused excitement among tourists who flock to the city during the summer season, but at the same time, has also brought worries to the vegetable industry in northern Benguet due to possible frost.

Government weather specialist Dr. Salvador Olinares of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), however, said the chill will no longer go down further than 10 degrees because records for the past 30 to 40 years show that the coldest temperature here comes only during the months of January and February.

The normal temperature in Baguio City ranges from 15 to 23 degrees while the daily average is 18 degrees.

Olinares said Wednesday’s drop to 10 degrees was considered "a weather extreme," though it is normal in Baguio City and is something that tourists love to experience.

The city’s coldest temperature – 6.3 degrees – was recorded on Jan. 18, 1961, while the highest temperature was 22.6 degrees.

Olinares said the tail-end of the hanging amihan (northeast monsoon) is blowing toward Northern Luzon the cold formations in Siberia, causing the chill.

"But people should not get threatened because as we are now approaching the summer season, it now begins to turn hotter each day," he said.

The feared frost in northern Benguet will unlikely to occur, he said.
