Matinee idol Sam Milby has been appointed by the Department of Education Center for Students and Co- Curricular Affairs (DEPED-CSCA) as their youth spokesperson and role model.
For his initial task, Sam recently spoke before student leaders in a convention held in Baguio City. In the past, Dingdong Dantes and Sam Concepcion were two of those who held the position Sam has been entrusted.
But Sam's appointment was met with disapproval from some quarters who questioned the actor's credentials and especially his inability to speak Filipino well enough which to our mind is petty and unfair.
We talked to Sam a few days ago and he impressed us with his almost fluent way of speaking Tagalog. He has improved a lot we noticed, and he attributed this to his constantly talking to people in Filipino, watching old Tagalog movies and by reading scripts.
"This is volunteer work which I gladly accepted because I'd like to do my share to inspire the youth to study harder, and not to smoke, drink or do drugs.
This is a campaign for anti-vices, also anti- violence," Sam said. As DEPED-CSCA youth spokesperson and role model, Sam will be required to speak in student conventions and conferences four times a year, which he will gladly squeeze into his busy schedule, he said.-GNP
