Samar seeks Guinness record for world's longest banig

BASEY - In 2000, the town of Basey, Samar claimed to have set the world record for making the longest mat in the world when community folks paraded a more than kilometer-long mat. But it was not made official since it was not submitted to the Guinness Book of World Records.
The town now aims to make it in the official Guinness Book of World Records after recently spreading a 2-kilometer woven mat.
Local weavers started making the longest mat using a local material called "tikug" last August 5.
After more than a month, locals paraded the longest "tikug" mat during the town's Banig-Kawayan Festival.
"Mat weaving is already a part of the town's culture and tradition. Let's just say Basey is the 'banig' capital of the Philippines or probably the world," Basey Mayor Wilfredo "Didi" Estorninos proudly said.
Local mat weavers like Catalina Regahan is proud to have been part of doing the longest "tikug" mat.
"If Guinness will officially recognize Basey for the longest mat in the world, this will definitely help boost our local mat industry", Catalina said in an interview.
During the Banig-Kawayan Festival, floats with a woven-mat theme were also paraded with beautiful ladies wearing gowns made of "tikug" mat.
