Trash from burned Baguio market deemed health hazard

A local health official has warned the public of possible dangers of the burnt debris to vendors of the razed vegetable section of the Baguio City public market.
Dr. Florence Reyes of the Baguio City Health Office said overexposure to the burnt garbage could cause respiratory tract infections.
"Hindi nila dapat sabihin na sipon lang yan o trangkaso, dahil kailangan nila maging alert talaga," Reyes said.
Vendors, meanwhile, had to endure the pungent smell of the rotting garbage and its adverse effect on consumers. "Matumal nga ang bentahan eh, kasi nababahuan ang mga mamimili kapag dumadaan sila dito," said Efren Mamaril, a vendor at the market.
Some sellers had even taken to wearing masks in order to carry on with business.
A two-hour fire razed the public market's vegetable section last March 2. Firemen extinguished the blaze almost two hours later at 5 a.m.
Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the fire.
Health service providers, meanwhile, said it was good that no one has gotten sick yet. They said they will work to provide medical outreach programs such as free medicines, to affected vendors.
The General Services Office, meanwhile, awaits approval from the city administration to remove the garbage.
