BAGUIO CITY — The air quality in this mountain resort city and nearby towns of Benguet is still good to fair and within the tolerable range for a healthy lifestyle, the Cordillera office of the Environmental Management Bureau said here Wednesday.
Dozens of air quality monitoring stations in strategic parts of Baguio and Benguet indicated that levels of total suspended particles in the air, particularly sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide, fluctuate on a day-to-day basis.
Engineer Alex Luis, EMB-CAR pollution control officer, cited the increase in the number of vehicles during peak hours as reasons for poorer air quality during rush hour although most parts of the city and the monitored towns have good air quality.
In the capital town of La Trinidad, Benguet, the air quality in the area of Km. 5 is considered unhealthy due to the thousands of vehicles crowding the provincial capital.
However, Luis said the air quality monitoring stations in the towns of Tuba, Itogon and Sablan indicate that the air quality in the areas is good and considered healthy for local residents and visitors.
Luis emphasized that the presence of trees and plants helps reduce total suspended particles in the air because they are absorbed by the plants and converted to oxygen.
Air quality is considered good if it has only 1-50 total suspended particles; fair if it has 50-80 total suspended particles; healthy from 80 to 120 total suspended particles; unhealthy, 120-180 total suspended particles; and emergency status if it has more than 180 total suspended particles.
