CALOOCAN CITY, March 22 (PIA) -- A Philippine National Police (PNP) official on Sunday said the shuttling of corpses from one place to another is being allowed amid the prevailing strict community quarantine procedures but would require appropriate clearances.
Speaking at the Laging Handa televised public briefing hosted by the Presidential Communications Operations Office on PTV Channel 4, PNP Spokesperson B/Gen. Bernard Banac said authorities are allowing funeral services and the transportation of the dead with valid permits.
“For as long as may clearance to transport ang namatay ng kanilang pamilya ay ibibiyahe na. Ito po ay iko-consider ng PNP at makakalusot sa quarantine control stations. Ito po ay permit from health and local authorities. Kasama po ito sa emergencies na pinapadaan sa fast lanes,” the official said.
The stringent quarantine measure, imposed by government that strictly limits the movement of at least 50 million people in Luzon against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) threat, also allows travel by funeral services employees and immediate family of the deceased.
Banac also clarified that funeral service establishments should remain open throughout the lockdown period since these are needed services by the public.
The protocol, however, prohibits the holding of funeral wakes as these are considered public gatherings that may spread the deadly virus, he said.
“Wala pong mangyayaring lamay. Mahigpit pong ipinagbabawal ngayon sa ilalim ng ating enhanced community quarantine ang pagkakaroon ng lamay. So, tayo man ay nakikiramay of course sa mga namatayan, pero hindi talaga maaari na magkaroon po ng gathering, pag iipon-ipon ng mga tao para iburol o para doon po sa lamay,” Banac said.
PCOO has been hosting the ‘Laging Handa’ platform, through print, television, radio, and online, on the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) in the Philippines by providing timely, relevant and interactive updates on the measures being done in addressing the disease and other related issues.
As of latest report by the Department of Health, there are about 307 confirmed COVID-19 cases across the Philippines, where 13 of the patients recovered and 19 died. (PIA NCR)
