Human barricade held to call for total closure of Irisan dumpsite in Baguio City

BAGUIO CITY - Even as rain was falling, old timers and waste pickers locked arms in a protest barricade at the entrance of Irisan dumpsite to call for its total closure.
Irisan Barangay ChairmanThomas Dumalti said that the authorities could not blame the residents for such acts since they are the ones directly affected by the ill-effects of the overflowing garbage in the dumpsite.

In less than a month, the dumpsite's height climbed to 100 meters from its baseline.
Authorities have declared that it as a hazardous indication that it should no longer be operating, since it has exceeded its 95-meter maximum capacity limit.
Moreover, the waterways were already covered with mountain-like garbage that may trigger flashfloods. Baguio City presently worries of finding a new prospective dumpsite. Earlier, residents of the nearby municipalities Tuba and Itogon expressed full opposition to Baguio's proposal to establish new dumpsites in their areas.
