The Department of Health on Monday ordered a nationwide recall of the popular Ludy's Sweet and Creamy peanut butter after it tested positive for salmonella.
Health Secretary Francisco Duque and Bureau of Food and Drugs chairman Leticia Gutierrez personally visited the Samuya Food Manufacturing Inc. manufacturing plant in 245 Juan Lakandula St, Hidalgo Village, Pasay City to deliver the suspension order against the company.
Duque said Samuya has 15 days to recall all its peanut butter products from store shelves.
BFAD earlier ordered the recall of two batches of another Samuya product, Yummy Peanut Butter, also for salmonella contamination.
Salmonella is an organism that causes infections, fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
Samuya officials said the company has so far incurred P6 million in losses due to the recall of its Yummy brand. They said they have yet to establish the source of the salmonella contamination, adding that the company imports its raw materials from India and China.
The BFAD started testing peanut spreads brought into the country after a salmonella outbreak in the United States early this year.
