Globe Telecom opens its Libreng Tawag service to Japan to help allay fears and apprehensions of Filipinos whose families and friends may have been affected by the massive earthquake and tsunami which hit Japan’s eastern coast early this afternoon. There are over one million Filipinos in Miyagi Prefecture near the epicenter of the 8.9 magnitude earthquake.
The free outgoing calls and text which was set up at the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) office in F.B. Harrison, Pasay City is part of the company’s continued support for OFWs and their families.
At the same time, Globe continues to extend its Libreng Tawag service to Filipino families who want to connect to Libya, New Zealand, Bahrain and Yemen until March 18 through the initiative of OWWA and the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC).
As of March 9, a total of over 6,000 repatriated OFWs from Libya have arrived in the country but about 10,000 more remain in the conflict-torn country. On the other hand, there are about 2,000 Filipinos working in Yemen where there is a brewing tension due to the growing pressure for the ouster of President Ali Abdullah Saleh. Bahrain, which has about 50,000 OFWs, is also experiencing volatile security situation.
