BACOLOD CITY, March 21 (PIA6)--A 56-year old male patient under investigation (PUI) from Bacolod City is the first Coronavirus 19 (COVID-19) positive of this city and in Western Visayas.
In a press conference last night by Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia, he said the patient came from the United Kingdom and his name is being withheld as authorities trace places he went to and the persons he has contact with.
The patient was declared a PUI on March 6.
In his Facebook post, Bacolod Councilor Israel Salanga claimed the patient is well and recovering, citing the attending physician.
In a telephone call in the middle of the press conference, Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson appealed for cooperation among Negrenses, saying “this is our fight,” stressing that it is not a local transmission.
Mayor Leonardia echoed the governor's call for cooperation because the enemy (corona virus) cannot be seen and is a worldwide disease.
He, along with other leaders, will continue to push for the availability of tests kits here, he said.
The mayor urged citizens to avoid political maneuvers that create distractions, adding his administration is open to suggestions.
“Let us contribute something positive,” he said.
The mayor said he is meeting the barangay leaders today to discuss the prevailing situation and harmonize anti-Covid 19 efforts.
He appealed to major mall owners to temporarily close down, which the latter heeded.
“This is a good step towards social distancing,” he said.
Meanwhile, City Administrator Em Ang said the city will set up a “Covid Quarantine Center for all Persons Under Monitoring (PUM) at the Education Training Center Extension Building.
Another "Respiratory Center" for patients manifesting respiratory condition and for consultation will be set up at the Bays Center.
The move will decongest the Out-Patient Department of hospitals, she said.
Bacolod City hospitals have a total of 38 isolation rooms while a major government hospital has 16 rooms that can still be extended.
Department of Education's school rooms in its seven districts will also be utilized, she added, when needed. (JSC/LLJR-PIA6)
