CEBU, March 20 (PIA) -- The Department of Health (DOH) here is urging Cebuanos not to panic following the confirmation of the first COVD-19 case in Cebu province.

In a statement, DOH-7 Regional Director Dr. Jaime Bernadas said the best way to combat the COVID-19 infection is to remain calm and follow the recommended preventive measures.

“We encourage the public not to panic. To fear is normal but we can fight this virus by remaining calm and following preventive measures being implemented by local authorities,” said Bernadas.

He also asked the public to be patient in the midst of the disruptions caused by the efforts implemented by the government to stop the transmission of COVID-19.

“We request our fellow citizens to be patient in the expected disruptions in their daily routine brought about by these measures. Let us all remember that the preventive measures are only effective if we all follow them,” stressed Bernadas.

On March 18, DOH-7 confirmed reports that Patient 188, a 65-year-old Filipino male admitted at Chong Hua Hospital in Mandaue City, tested positive for COVID-19.

The DOH regional director said Patient 188’s health condition is already stable and improving.

“The Regional Epidemiological Surveillance Unit is taking the next steps to validate the case and its contacts,” said Bernadas.

This is the first recorded COVID-19 case in Cebu province, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in Central Visayas to three with one mortality and one recovered.

Bernadas also urged netizens to refrain from sharing unverified information online as national laws and local ordinances are in place “to guard the public against fake news that aims to sow panic and confusion.” (poc/PIA7)
