DTI-7: Basic goods supply more than enough in CV

CEBU CITY, March 26 (PIA) -- The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Region 7 assured the public that Central Visayas has more than enough supply of basic goods that can last even until the end of the year.

During the pilot episode of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Region 7’s online interview dubbed “Straight From The Source”, the Chief of Consumer Protection Division of DTI-7, Ines Cajegas, said there is no reason to resort to panic buying amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

“We have been assured by the manufacturers that their production rate is still at a hundred percent,” Cajegas said.

She stressed that there is definitely no need to buy more than the consumption needs of the household.

She added that this translates to the assurance that the supply of basic commodities such as rice, sugar, canned products, and processed milk, among others, can last even until the end of this year.

Cajegas also noted that so far in the region, there are no recorded cases of hoarding, but a lot are panic buying.

“DTI understands the worry of the public in this extraordinary times. However, we encourage everyone not to resort to panic buying as this creates an uneven distribution of goods,” Cajegas said.

To counter this, DTI is keen on regulating the number of basic goods that consumers can purchase per transaction.

The issuance of Memorandum Circular (MC) 20-07 prevents the absurd excess buying among consumers and the implementation of price increase for all basic commodities amid the declarationo of a Public Health Emergency.

Cajegas warned that both consumers and retailers can be penalized if they go against the memorandum.

DTI also encouraged retailers to immediately replenish their shelves the moment their displays run out.

“This is to assure the public that we have enough supplies for them. We do not want to see pictures circulating online claiming that we have shortage of goods, when in fact, we have more than enough,” Cajegas said.

She also encouraged the netizens to be mindful of what they share on social media to avoid causing panic to the buying public. (HFG/JKM/PIA7).
