Navotas uses 'katok' system for family food pack delivery amid quarantine

CALOOCAN CITY, March 22 (PIA) -- The City Government of Navotas on Saturday began distribution of 18,000 relief packs to Navoteño families through a “katok system,” a statment sent to the PIA NCR said.

Each food pack contains five kilos of rice and 16 pieces of assorted canned goods to augment the food requirement of families directed to stay at home amid the strict isolation procedures being imposed by government to combat the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Priority beneficiaries included informal settler families living in danger zones and residents of the city’s housing projects.

The city employed a “katok system” where local government employees knock on the door of a beneficiary’s home, hand one member a claim stub and advise him or her where to get the relief pack.

The distribution team waits for 30 seconds before knocking the next structure to ensure no overcrowding will take place and social distancing is observed.

Mayor Toby Tiangco, for his part, encouraged all Navoteño to strictly follow the rules and regulations of the enhanced community quarantine.

“Stay home and avoid going out if not for valid reasons. The home quarantine is for your own good and for the safety of your loved ones,” Mayor Toby said.

Tiangco warned that anyone who approaches the vehicle carrying the relief packs or comes to the distribution venue without a claim stub could be arrested for violation of the quarantine order.

As of latest figures, the Navotas City Police reported a total of 96 violators of home quarantine. Violators could face jail time for defying Article 151 of the Revised Penal Code.

“We are fortunate that Navotas is still COVID-free and we hope to keep this status. To be able to do that, we need everyone’s utmost cooperation,” he added.

Navotas has zero COVID-19 positive persons, 96 persons under monitoring and four persons under investigation as of latest data. (PIA NCR)
