Petty crimes in CDO dip due to curfew, says PNP

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, March 28, (PIA) – Lower crime rates were observed since the implementation of a curfew here amid coronavirus disease (COVID-19) threat.

Similar to that of the National Capital Region, a decrease in petty crimes was noted in the city due to stringent police visibility during enhanced community quarantine for COVID-19. "The city which used to have moderate reports of theft, vandalism, shoplifting and the like is now seeing a decrease in crime statistics, PLtCol) Llewellyn C. Datiles of the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office said.

"For March 10 to 16, there were only eight recorded crimes - four robberies, two thefts, one physical injury, and one rape - and for March 17 to 23, there were only eight theft, one rape, two carnapping, two physical injury, and one murder," she shared, adding these data were lower than the previous months before the city implemented community quarantine due to COVID-19.

She, however, observed that thefts in commercial establishments were more prevalent than in residential houses, as business establishments have less personnel during the community quarantine.

She also disclosed that serving warrants of arrest for wanted persons and drug campaign continue  despite the community quarantine.

"In fact, last week we had 18 operations and 33 persons were arrested, she revealed.

"On top of the regular police operations, the  COCPO is dealing with the COVID situation in a different approach that involves civilians," she said, adding "We see we cannot handle the problem in the usual manner. So we ask the community to help out and see the real purpose of implementing the curfew."

As the city faces new challenges in the coming months, the lady police official has urged the people to discipline themselves and the people around them.

“We ask the people to help educate our fellow Kagay-anons since we still have brothers and sisters who do not understand the purpose of community quarantine,” she said. (VPSBautista/PIA10)
